On the morning of November 29, in Ho Chi Minh City, the “AFFA Working Group Conference – Discussing the AFFA Logistics Training Institute (ALI)” officially took place. This event marked the beginning of the series of activities for the 29th Annual Conference of the ASEAN Federation of Forwarders Associations (AFFA), held over two days, November 29–30, 2019.

This year’s AFFA Conference, hosted by the Vietnam Logistics Business Association (VLA), represents a significant milestone in the continuous development of Vietnam’s logistics service industry. It also underscores VLA’s proactive and dedicated efforts to enhance benefits for its members. Through this conference, it also provides an excellent opportunity for ASEAN logistics associations and their members to strengthen connections and expand trade networks.

Kicking off the series of events was the “AFFA Working Group Conference – Discussing the AFFA Logistics Training Institute (ALI),” chaired by Mr. Somsak Wisetruangrot, Chairman of the AFFA Logistics Training Institute, with the participation of over 40 members from national associations.

The main focus of today’s session was the continued discussion on the training programs and plans of the AFFA Logistics Training Institute (ALI). These programs were previously approved during the AFFA Mid-Year Conference held in Bangkok, Thailand, in June 2019. The predecessor of ALI was the AFFA Education and Training Working Group. Recognizing the importance of training quality and improving workforce standards, ALI was officially approved and established with the unanimous agreement of all AFFA council members at the recent AFFA Mid-Year Conference in Thailand.

ALI aims to become a key provider of high-quality human resources and a leading training center for logistics professionals in Asia across the fields of commerce, transportation, and logistics services. It focuses on researching and developing specialized logistics training materials to foster sustainable workforce development through collaborative efforts between businesses and academic institutions in Southeast Asia.

The conference will continue with various activities over November 29–30, discussing and finalizing core content such as the AFFA Standard Trading Conditions (STC) for association members, liability insurance for logistics service providers, security and safety in transport and logistics operations, and measures to promote multimodal and cross-border transportation among regional countries. Additionally, efforts will focus on advancing the training and development of high-quality logistics human resources to support the growth of the logistics industry in each member association and the ASEAN region. These initiatives aim to connect the ASEAN market with the global economy and contribute actively to the implementation of free trade agreements, particularly the RCEP, scheduled for signing in 2020.

Founded on December 7, 1991, AFFA is a regional business organization comprising 10 Southeast Asian countries. Its mission is to promote the freight forwarding and logistics industry through intergovernmental cooperation and to facilitate the transportation of goods among member countries and other Asian nations.

AFFA holds an Annual Conference and a Mid-Year Meeting each year, with hosting responsibilities rotated among its member associations. At each conference, the host country typically organizes cultural events to showcase its unique traditions and artistry. The Annual Conference serves as an excellent opportunity to strengthen professional collaboration among association members and member businesses, while also fostering friendship and mutual understanding among ASEAN member countries.
